The future workforce of Tennessee was on full display at the SkillsUSA Tennessee State Leadership and Skills Conference and championship competitions held in Chattanooga, TN April 10-12. Over 2,500 participants including students, advisors, volunteers, and our wonderful industry partners. Career and technical education students from high schools and colleges across the state competed in 106 contests demonstrating their talents in multiple career areas, including various manufacturing, transportation, construction, hospitality and human services fields.

The Opening Ceremony Monday night kicked off with the Parade of Champions. Thank you to all schools who participated. The night continued with encouraging words from the Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger as he welcomed the group to Chattanooga. Our keynote speaker for the evening was Doug Starrett, President and Chief Executive Officer of the L.S. Starrett Company and a tremendous supporter of SkillsUSA.

The highlight of the night came when James King presented a brand new NISSAN car to a well-deserving student. Congratulations to Travis France from TCAT Morristown for being awarded the 2017 Outstanding Student of the Year. A huge thank you to Wayne Ellington and Kevin Smith from Nissan for their exceptional partnership with SkillsUSA.

Tuesday was filled with more competitions and community service. The evening concluded with a nice dinner at the Chattanooga Convention Center and all participants were able to have fun at the Tennessee Aquarium. The conference wrapped up Wednesday morning with the Awards and Closing Ceremony. Congratulations to all State Medalists!

The State Officer Team wanted to thank everyone for another excellent Tennessee Postsecondary event. They look forward to seeing you at the SkillsUSA National Conference in Louisville in June!
