SkillsUSA, together with the Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology, provided leadership training for students and advisors on November 23-24, 2015 at the annual Tennessee Leadership Training Institute in Murfreesboro, TN. This conference focused on developing attendees' skills needed to be champions at work in their communitites and in their personal lives. The sessions covered topics about the importance of the impact of an individual as a leader, citizen, and employer. At this year’s conference many honored guests, from Tennessee Board of Regents office including Vice Chancellor James King, Vice Chancellor David Gregory, and SkillsUSA State Director Chelle Travis, joined our state officer team. Our keynote speaker for Monday night’s banquet was Mike Krause, Executive Director of the Tennessee Promise and the Drive to 55 Programs.

At TLTI, students learned what it means to become an advocate for career and technical training. Student sessions included information on upcoming legislation that affects their campus and everyone is encouraged to get involved by contacting their legislators. The goal is to empower student members of SkillsUSA by teaching about the legislative process and how individuals can share their views with elected officials. The coveted TLTI Statesman Award is presented each year to participants of TLTI who have demonstrated their leadership skills and have mastered certain requirements in leadership training. Recipients were recognized during Tuesday's awards ceremony.

At this conference students voted on candidates for the next state officer team. We are proud to announce the 2016 State Officer Team members are: Cassidy Bell, TCAT Chattanooga; Molly Martin, TCAT Chattanooga; Drake Fox, TCAT Crump; Kevin Howard, TCAT Crump; Nisha Brown, TCAT Hohenwald; Sherrie Wilcox, TCAT Knoxville; and Brandon Perry, TCAT McKenzie.
